Our customers say:

This essential LP release contains Franklinâs magnificent debut album for Columbia, Aretha (1961), featuring a series of All Star groups conducted by pianist Ray Bryant.

Producer John Hammond followed the formula he once prescribed for his âdiscoveryâ Billie Holiday: standards and blues with a jazz rhythm section plus horns and âhead charts.â Per Hammond, there was âan almost complete absence of arrangementsâ for the LP. Ironically, there was no Ray Bryant Combo; as Bryant once declared that his âcomboâ was invented for the album. Featuring a virtual whoâs who of fabulous musicians from the East Coast jazz scene, including Tyree Glenn, Osie Johnson, Milt Hinton, Al Sears and Ray Bryant himself, among others. Arethaâs tracks reveal a sweet, even coy insouciance on songs like âRight Now,â and alternatively, a roof-raising belt on âSweet Lover.â In addition to the original album, this limited collectorâs edition contains 4 bonus tracks from the same period: âI Apologize,â Itâs So Heartbreakinâ,â âDonât Cry, Baby,â and âRock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody.â It serves as the best introduction for anyone wanting to explore âLady Soulâsâ first steps. This is the material upon which Arethaâs soul kingdom and unique personal style were built.
