Rachmaninov: Piano Trios

Decca celebrates only pianist to record all composer’s works with piano Fifty years after making his first Rachmaninov recordings for Decca, Vladimir Ashkenazy has realised his lifelong ambition to record all of the composer’s works with piano. He is joined in two piano trios – Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor and Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor Op. 9 – by two outstanding young colleagues: violinist Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay, leader of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and cellist Mats Lidström. Both have worked extensively with Ashkenazy through his time with the Philharmonia and other orchestras. The disc is rounded off by two exquisite Rachmaninov miniatures – the Vocalise from 14 Songs, Op. 34, and Dream from 6 Songs, Op. 38.
