James Channing comes from humble beginnings, but he has been climbing his way up the social and political ladder since a kind stranger gifted him with a higher education. Though he leads a busy life, he always has time for the girl next door, who has been his closest friend since childhood. Arabella Carlyle has been in love with James Channing since he came to her rescue after an accident when she was twelve years old.
