The History of Modern Tanning Industry in Kano

This Book re-examine the very nature of tanning and modern tanneries in Kano in the period 1949 - 2000. The year 1949 witnessed the first modem tannery in Kano. The production of leather has long been the most important crafts for the people of Kano. After the Colonial conquest in 1903 of Kano, the British took over the control material sales ranging from cotton, to groundnuts and hides and skins. Hence, colonial policies on these products were introduced. This study looks into the historical development of the Modern Tanning Industry, the first being established in 1949. It also explores the position of the Nigerian ?Fanning Industry and World Trade. The marketing out-lets of both the wet blue skin and the finished leather are mostly out-side Nigeria and a minimal percentage of the finished leather is consumed locally or at the domestic level, People from the lgbo ethnic groups from the eastern part of Nigeria are the major marketers of the finished leather within the country.
