Imparting Growth Momentum to Traditional Agriculture: a Study of Eastern India

The green revolution breaking out in 1960s transformed India from food deficit to food surplus economy. In the post Green Revolution years much of the increase in India's rice production took place in non-traditional rice growing areas. But with weakening of government procurement and price support and phasing out of water and electricity subsidies, rice is likely to be replaced by crops that will be more remunerative in the changed circumstances. In eastern India where fertile land and water were available in abundant but poor infrastructure for farmers to adopt and exploit the potentials of more productive technology interventions became necessary to provide these missing means. A major interventions came in the state of Assam in eastern India in the form of World Bank supported Assam Rural Infrastructure and Agricultural Services Project, major intervention in agricultural sector in the eastern India. The book present fairly comprehensive account of the status of Assam, a state of eastern India, in respect of agriculture and the special package implemented with aid from World Bank. The book should be of immense use to students, teachers, professionals and policy makers.
