In the beginning of the 1990s the nationalist movement has placed language issue on the top of political agenda in the Republic of Tatarstan. The Tatar language was made second official in Tatarstan along with Russian. This has paved way for the ambitious program of the Tatar language revitalization which was aimed at ensuring the vitality of the language and raising its social status. This work examines the policies of the Tatar language revitalization and analyzes the reasons for its successes and failures.
