The People of Nant y Gro Chapel

A lively and humorous first hand portrayal of the lives and people in a fictional Nonconformist community in North Wales during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was first published in Welsh in 1914 and reviews in the Welsh language newspapers of the time show that it was exceptionally popular. This new translation offers a view of a Wales that has long disappeared where the chapels and their elders held sway, and ordinary people discussed literature, politics, theology and matters of the soul as a normal part of everyday life. The author O. Madoc Roberts lived in North Wales. It is based firstly on his experiences growing up in the Wesleyan Methodist community of Porthmadog in North Wales where his father was a ship's captain and his grandfather a farmer nearby in Talsarnau. Later experiences and stories came after he studied to become a Methodist Minister at Didsbury College, Manchester. He then preached throughout North Wales. From 1917 he worked in the Methodist Bookroom in Bangor. You will enjoy being transported to another age and set of beliefs, meeting the chapel elders and members of their congregation and hearing about their lives, loves, successes and tragedies. Read this book and enjoy getting to know the People of Nant y Gro Chapel.
