Joseph Doyle, Canal Town Sheriff

Engaged as a teenage undercover agent, Joe Doyle arrived from Ireland in 1820 with a passion for a career in law enforcement. When his involvement with the gangs of New York City became too dangerous, he headed for Philadelphia to join the police force. Due to his inexperience, the police department there rejected him. Joe chose to join the Army after a few years at college and was assigned in the deep south, where he became involved with the early years of Indian control. Discontented with the treatment of Native Americans, and his shock over the Trail of Tears forced migration, Joe returned to the north where he eventually became the sheriff of Berks County, Pennsylvania. At the commencement of the Civil War, Joe reentered the Union Army where he fought as a member of the Irish Brigade. Throughout his life, an unseen guardian angel looked over Joe's shoulder and intervened on several occasions to save his life. An intimate protector that he would have never suspected, for several siblings of the Doyle family did indeed possess mystical powers.
