AfroAstronomy

AfroAstronomy: The Journey of Our Universe is a Special Project that addresses the links between African American culture and astronomy by examining the history of their ancestors as well as taking a deeper look into today's African American culture as it relates and connects with astronomy. Notwithstanding the place of African Americans in the field today, it seems as though much of the public is uninformed, badly informed or simply unaware of the role of astronomy within the African and African American cultures. This project looks to marginally dismiss some of the imbalance between the perception of African Americans in astronomy and the reality of the African American cultures appreciation of astronomy. The book was researched and written by Keonda Gaspard as her 2012 thesis project for thee University of Chicago under the advisement of Dr. Peter Vandevoort, the head of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and Noble Peace Prize Laureate.
