Sam Cooke

Hits of the 50 S

Sam Cooke's second RCA album is the label having him cover pop hits of the previous decade, and the result is an album aimed at what the label thought the white teenage market was all about (and if their parents would be comfortable with them buying from a black recording artist!). Sam Cooke as a nightclub crooner, singing gentle versions of fifties standards around midnight. Smooth and relaxed, singing slower and lower with a languid band. Sam Cooke, one of the most beautiful voices ever croons Johnny Ray's "Hey There" and "Cry", Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa", "The Great Pretender" from The Platters and last but not least one of the most covered songs ever "Unchained Melody".
