Andrew Cartmel (born 1958) is a British author and journalist. He was the script editor of Doctor Who during the Sylvester McCoy era of the show between 1987 and 1989. He has also worked as a script editor on other television series, as a magazine editor, as a comics writer, as a film studies lecturer, and as a novelist.

He is a record collector, a connoisseur of vinyl, hunting out rare and exclusive LPs. His business card describes him as the "Vinyl Detective" and some people take this more literally than others. Like the beautiful, mysterious woman who wants to pay him a large sum of money to find a priceless lost recording, on behalf of an extremely wealthy (and rather sinister) shadowy client. Given that he's just about to run out of cat biscuits, this gets our hero's full attention. So begins a painful and dangerous odyssey in search of the rarest jazz record of them all...incl. some Crème De La Crème recordings like Miles Davis' "I Could Write A Book" and Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and more!...all sandwiched in between Joe Kraemer's versions of "Theme From The Vinyl Detective".
