My Favorite Things

In March 1960, while on tour in Europe, **Miles Davis** purchased a soprano saxophone for **John Coltrane**. After leaving the **Miles Davis Band**, back in New York, Coltrane assembled the first version of the John Coltrane Quartet. The line-up settled in the summer to: *McCoy Tyner* on piano, *Steve Davis* on double bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. With this quartet Coltrane recorded *'My Favorite Things'* a landmark album in John Coltrane's career. In 1961 John Coltrane's explorations of different modes and rhythms led to several powerful works that invoked other cultures. The great tenor and his quartet were joined by a medium-sized backup group on Eric Dolphy arrangements of *'Africa,'* *'Greensleeves,'* and *'Blues Minor.'*
