The Acme Sessions 1952-1956

Generally considered to be 'the first family' of American country music, A.P. Carter, his wife Sara and his sister-in-law Maybelle were a significant, commercially successful and highly influential trio from the late 1920s to the early '40s. Although A.P. and Sara separated midway through this period she continued to perform with the group until they called it a day. That part of The Carter Family's legacy has been repeatedly documented with various box sets and 'best ofs'. However, in 1952 a sharp-talking preacher cum businessman, one Clifford Spurlock, persuaded A.P. and Sara to get back together, this time with their offspring Joe and Jeanette. This to record for Spurlock's own Acme label, primarily aimed at Sears' catalogue customers. The four year venture wasn't a great commercial success because the Carters were by then out of step with the changing country music scene and the early salvos of Rock 'n' Roll. Nevertheless, musically they still cut the mustard, reprising some of their earlier successes mixed with new compositions in the old tradition. This hitherto unheralded part of The Carter Family's history is fully documented by this 2CD set.
